Peel slowly and see… – A tribute to Velvet Underground & Andy Warhol

In the 1960s, American artist Andy Warhol became famous for his artistic production based on the mass reproduction of common objects, such as Campbell’s soup cans or Coca Cola bottles. Warhol was also a music enthusiast and often frequented New York’s nightclubs where the Velvet Underground, an alternative rock band, performed.
In 1967, Warhol became the producer of the Velvet Underground’s first album, titled “The Velvet Underground & Nico.” Warhol proposed adding an image of a banana to the album’s cover and asked fashion designer and artist Gerard Malanga to draw it. Malanga’s banana was a stylized image with a peelable adhesive film that revealed a pink banana underneath.
The banana on the album cover became an iconic image of pop culture, and its meaning has often been interpreted differently. Some saw the banana as a sexual reference, while others interpreted it as a symbol of power and popularity. Warhol himself had said that the banana represented the concept of “peel slowly and see,” an invitation to discover the album’s contents.
In any case, Warhol’s banana became a symbol of the 1960s pop culture, and the Velvet Underground’s album cover became one of the most famous examples of graphic design in music history.
